Hello I got a question about packing color is it better to use say a 4.0 cam or a 3.4 cam on a rotary machine and if so what are the difference between the 2....

.6mm :)

one is going to hit the skin more times per second because it has a shorter travel. I would think for packing the smaller number would be better. I really don't know though.

if you stretch really well you can pack with bone and ash...just sayin'. :)

Long stroke for packing , and lining , like the bishop wand packer has a 4mm stroke the theory is the needle rotates longer in the ink , so picks up and deposits more in the skin , also Franco Vescovi description is that a longer stroke is faster than a short stroke

I thought stroke is only for ink pickup? The cycles are the same for long or short but the amount of ink pickup differs. I use a shorter stroke or less hang for packing black.

Long stroke for more downward force particularly for bigger group liners

I thought on a coil hit was a byproduct of voltage...speed remains constant but as you increase volts hit becomes harder??

But on a rotary hit should be constant but speed increases with voltage.

And the amount of needling going in the skin will be constant as well. (should be)

so really, with a cam that pulls the needle back further in the tube the only real difference should be the time it isn't in the skin???

this is 6am math...I'm so confused right now.

There is no right or wrong to this question,it only comes down to personal preference, try all lengths and see which you prefer, you can pack ,and line perfectly with both

Store length is parallel to saturation time in the tube, and in skin. Furthermore, punch your hand from an inch away, then do it from two inches away, the longer the wind up, the harder the hit. So, if the standard is 3.5 mm, 4 is that much more punch, so, as the travel is longer, you need to turn down the speed or voltage a little to compensate for the additional trave as well as saturation time. If I line at 8 on 3.5, I line between 6.5 and 7.5v on a 4mm machine lining and adjust my hand speed (same for packing). I use 3.5 or occasionally 3mm for shading as a rule. I hope that gives a little more clarification to the question at hand.
