Yo.
ive just been slathering aquaphor or Vaseline on my healing tattoos. Honestly I’m not sure if this is proper aftercare technique so if anyone could let me know if it is important to buy a tattoo specific brand or if I should just keep doing what I’m doing.
thanks

We don't get Aquaphor in Australia as far as I know, so I can;t comment on that.....I definately wouldn't use vaseline as it's petroleum based and wouldn't allow a healing tattoo to breathe....the Bepanthen link that you posted looks very similar to what we get here in Australia, it's a Nappy (Diaper) Rash cream, and if it's good for a babies bum, it's shouldn't harm a tattoo.....we can get our Bepanthen from grocery store, supermarkets or Pharmacies (Drug Stores) in the baby care section.

Bepanthen is the traditional advice for ointment for tattoos healing 👍🏼

(That was strange English but you get what I mean 😊)

well, nothing should be "slathered". Thin coats of anything and everything.
If you're not using a second skin product (saniderm, etc...) then I usually recommend Bacitracin in THIN layers for 15 minutes, then wash with a non-scented soap and air dry twice a day. Once all the scabbing is gone, switch to washing twice a day and applying non-scented lotion 3 times a day.

Oh yeah, and Aquaphor is petroleum based as well. Petroleum based products clog the pores and can actually leach ink out in some cases.

We always recommend to apply a proper Tattoo aftercare creams as there are so many great brands nowadays that worked on the cream that will specifically help a tattoo. Bepanthen cream is ok.. but people often confuse cream and ointment, it's ointment that should be used on tattoo, and still not as good as for example 'Tattoo Goo'.
Good luck, you will be fine :)
