Hi all, I went to a tattoo con on Sunday and got two pieces completed on my arm, the 1st piece reaches down to the top of my wrist, extending slightly onto my hand.

The day after I then had a session with my personal trainer.

My hand has looked the same (not getting any better or worse) since the Monday evening.

There are no other signs or symptoms of infection, no excessive redness, tattoo mildly warm to touch but not excessive, no fever, nausea or pus.

Have I just aggravated it with the gym or is this amount of swelling normal? I've had 14 tattoos previously but this is the first that has reached my hand so just want some advice on whether to go and see a GP or leave it and it will calm down!

See pic below.

If it's normal, how long until it goes down roughly? (know everyone is different)

Hi Stephanie,
You should not really be exerting yourself especially in the gym for a day or two after being tattooed (dont forget your body will feel like it has had minor surgery and will react as though in mild shock so needs recovery time) especially on the hands, however, as you say, everyone is different. Try resting with your hand raised perhaps sitting back with it on your upper chest/shoulder while you watch tv a bit, if it goes down then it is simply fluid and response to the exertion, if not then it may be a rare case of reaction and should go down in a few days. Another important factor is to not allow jewelry or tight cuffs etc to rub it, but in the picture it looks fine.
