Vaselines main downside is that it doesnt let the tattoo breath and locks in all the germs, So there is more chance of infection and it takes longer to heal. Also from what ive herd it draws out ink from the skin but I dont know how true that is

years ago i used nothing at all and mine turned out ok but it doesn't mean everyone is the same, you should of asked him why didn't he do what you had told him to do.

I use it during the tattoo process, and a light coat of it when I bandage. Back in the day when I got a tattoo I used it towards the end of my healing process. Some people say it takes from the colors, but I never seen it. Others say it is oil based so it will clog the pours of the skin, but again if used right it will not. After care is like tattooing so to speak, it is finding what works for you and your clients.

One shop by me recommends preperation H for after care. Some recommend A&D or triple antibiotic ointment. Others recommend diaper rash cream.

It's been my experience that petroleum based stuff will make a tattoo weep ink. With vaseline I can apply it thin and 45 minutes later take a perfect print of the tattoo off onto a paper towel. When I use a triple antibiotic cream (white stuff) I never have that issue.

That being said...what's good for one isn't always good for all.

Early in this thread I said I did not see a problem with Vaseline, now I seen first hand when a tattoo was bandaged with it on a non stick bandage, it got sticky and pulled big chunks of the tattoo ink out. It may be good to use after a few days, but right away and during the process, it looks like it is no good.

I have seen the bleeding of ink when using petro based products to heal a tattoo, also when tattooing I read that petro based products break down the latex gloves in 3 minutes. So after 3 minutes you might as well not wear gloves. I have read somewhere that tattoos will also be brighter if applied without any petro based products. something to think about...

I got a full sleeve tribal( really large blades). 7yrs ago and i used vaseline to heal the tatt. it was totally healed in less than 7 days without a blemish. also the tattooist that done the work was a U.S.A and UK award winning artist. he knew his stuff, but like everything else times change. i now use bepanthen and still heal in less than a week with great results. I will say in my opinion your better using bepanthen its great for the skin.

I always use vaseline, A&D or Neosporin/Triple Antibiotic.

If you only use a small amount you wont have a problem.

Bepanthan is the best thing ive used, and as others have said, heals fast and good for the skin, but its each to there own, and what ever works best for you.

i use nitrile gloves, read about vaseline destroying latex a few month back. Nitrile lasts a lot longer than latex and is about the same price for a box of 100

I agree, in greece it's called bepanthol, and it's good. I use vaseline through the prosses though. and antiseptic of course.

Big fan of Aquaphor ointment myself for the healing process. Very light coats. A little pricey in the stores but does a wonderful job.

Thumbs down to vaseline for various reasons:
1. It is a petroleum product which soaks the ink and ultimately the tattoo will loose its shine and will fade up.
2. It prevents over scabbing, however there is a risk of contamination by its use.

An acute application of aqua based moisturizer is best for the healing process.

What else can be used during the tattooing process other than vaseline? (again not aftercare but while tattooing)

I Like A&D Better. Vaseline Is Too Thick & A Pain In The Butt To Apply. A&D Is Alot Easier To Apply.

i've always used bepanthen and it's awesome the tat heals perfectly, never use savlon though like some idiot in a shop told me to use once, totally messed all the colour pigment up and was a pain heeling!

i guess we are all different though and react differently

I heard from an American Tattooist/reptile keeper he uses listerine for after care! It's also used for cleaning snake cages as it's anti bacterial and kills snake mites. Never used it on a tattoo myself though! I use Tattoo Goo product as I am allergic to lots of things including bepanthan!

I read now too that vaseline is not as good for tattooing
and that tattooers should use A&D instead (istn't that just vaseline with some vitamines??) ... hmm,
when I got my first tat more than 20 years ago we only did vaseline during and to heal the tat and mine look o.k. till now ...
friends of mine have been said only to do bepanthol .. but on the other hand that stuff makes quick healing .. do we want that??
some only use 'naked bee' or hustle butter ..

I actually don't know which way to go but to me hustle butter and/or naked bee seem to be a good idea .. we will see in 20 years *LOL*

I had a tat recently with uv ink it was really angry my skin didn't like the uv ink at all after a few days I put 3 to 4 drops teatree oil into a tea spoon of Vaseline and gave it a light coat after a couple hours it mellowed out red subsided scabs started to look more like they should a second light coat hours later she was happy. I think pet jelly has a place and person just like you don't usually line with a mag etc right tool for the job but I'm no expert ?
