Hello everyone, I really need some help here cus we’re lost.
On monday (02/11) my bf got his first tattoo, it was on the side of the left calf, it was very big for a first tattoo, and the artist said they could do all of it in one sitting (which is a questionable decision, but he also did my first tattoo and we had no problems with it, so we trusted him!) the tattoo has black outlined, shading and A LOT of green (its a tree, so yeah...)

For the first two or three days my boyfriend kept the tattoo wrapped while at work, since he works standing and he must wear pants, he said he replaced the wrap every four hours, to keep it clean and dry. The artist also told him not to use any healing creams.

Yesterday (friday) four days after the session, he went to work with no wrap for the first time, when he got home, he was washing the tattoo, and pieces of the green part of the tattoo simply FELL OFF revealing red flesh, like an open wound with no ink in it! We were dead worried and even considered infection, we applied antibiotic cream AROUND the tattoo, to try and get some of the antibiotics into his system!

Today, he decided to go to work with a wrap, when he felt the wrap wet he went to take it off and even MORE of the skin fell off stuck to the wrap!!! I keep telling him that its gonna be ok, but I’m seriously worried!!

I'm worried about his health AND the possibility of him ending up with something completely HIDEOUS on his leg because right now, it looks hideous!!!

I'll post the pictures so you can have a general idea of the evolution of the tattoo, how it should look and what it looks like now.

We really appreciate your help, and if you tell us to go to the doctor, we will!!!!

The pictures show what it looked like on the first day 2/11.
3 days later when my boyfriend started noticing some crookedness, 2/14.
4 days later, when the first green pieces fell off, revealing the flesh, 2/15.
5 days later, today, when even more fell, 2/16.

You can see that the raw skin is centered onto a certain area, which is the last part that was inked, so overwork is a strong possibility, but we don't really know what to do, and the artist hasn't been super helpful.
The rest seem to be healing very well!

It looks like the lighter colors were over worked into the skin. Lighter colors are harder to get in and people overwork the skin sometimes. It is a little infected as you can see the redness around the tattoo. This will take around a month to completely heal and then you will know what you are left with. It will most likely need a second pass of color to cover anything that fell out.

How were you taking care of it as far as aftercare?

My boyfriend thinks he kept it wrapped too long but he followed the artist instructions on this, he wrapped it for three days, washing it every four hours at work and kept it unwrapped at home, which kind of translates to 9 hours of wrapping and 13 hours open.
On the 13th he had to spend longer wrapped, but I'm not entirely sure how much longer.

He skipped the wrapping on the 15th, had the first pieces of skin fall off, wrapped again today (16th), skin fell off even more. He felt the absence of the wrapping could be causing it, but it happened again today so....

He also did not use any healing or antibiotic creams, only a thin layer of moisturizer.

I think I went into a lot of details on the original post, so if I missed any important points there, let me know, I'm still a noob when it comes to tattoos.
Should we go see a doctor for the infection or is that overkill?

to me it looks like the tattoo started to scab, then the heavier scabs got wet and moist, which allowed them to prematurely pull away, leaving raw skin underneath. The redness around the perimeter may just be the bodies natural reaction to the trauma and healing of the tattoo. If it was me i would let it dry out being mega careful not to scratch or knock any more scabs off and let nature take it's course rather than moisturising etc. You could go to the doctors and they will prescribe some anti biotic ointment even if they think it's infected or not, to cover themselves. That's what happened to a previous poster on here. It's a good tattoo, judging by the first pic.
