I’ve been practicing on fake skin for a few months and would really love to make a career tattooing. I’m starting out in the industry a little late in life but I’m not a noob. I would hang at a couple shops throughout my life and I get advice from an artist that’s done a lot of my work. I don’t want to rush the process but finding an apprenticeship is non existent since moving away from my hometown. I’d like to do the tattooing101 program but I want to make sure that it’s gonna get me to the point I need to get my certifications and license. What do you think?

Sorry Nathan if you didn't want your name put out there.

your moving to where?

certs & licenses are different from state to state & region to region. In Colorado where I live, the counties determine requirements. El Paso requires a blood borne pathogen (bbp) class, first aid class, hep B vaccination, & pass a test by the county that is basically just the bbp test again. in Pueblo - you just need a bbp cert. In Las Vegas where I did my apprenticeship I needed a buy off from my shop that i was in fact an apprentice & what date that started, bbp, hep B, & pass 2 different tests that were given. I had to do the bbp, 1st test, & 1st hep shot before I could start doing "apprentice stuff". you then couldn't get your tat license for something like 6 months from the start of your apprenticeship.

so in colorado - i can be a "licensed" tattoo artist 100% on my own (anyone can) & in las vegas i need sponsors, so to speak (everyone does - even someone that has been tattooing else where for decades). in neither place do you have to be a good artist or even do good tattoos (scarring, falling out, wobbly lines, etc...). they just care about their health book & check lists.

now - i don't know what's in the tattooing 101 course. looking at it though it looks pretty comprehensive to me. you can learn everything you need on your own via youtube & practice victims... if it were me & i were in your position i would heavily consider it though... especially since it's on sale right now.

Hey bro If your goal is to become a professional tattoo artist, Tattooing 101 will give you everything you need to get there. We have had over 4000 students use our programs since we started back in 2016. A number of our students are inside this forum as well. If you would like to reach out to them and ask what their experience has been like so far let me know and I can introduce you to a few of them. :)

Amazing learning platform, and unique teaching guide.. if you're looking for an online program this is a program I have not regretted signing up for and continue to learn more.

I've been in the program for over a year, and it's definitely been worth it. It's true that there is a great deal of information available for free online, but having it presented in a currated order with each lesson building towards a tattoo career is more helpful then just watching YouTube.

I'm a 53 year old who decided to pursue tattooing less than one year ago, I currently work as an artist in a professional shop and completed my first tattoo convention. Yes, the program absolutely works! There's no chance I would have been able to learn through a traditional apprenticeship and Tattooing 101 provides the perfect learning situation. Everything you need to know is presented in an easy to follow manner. The modules are divided into specific topics that take you from total beginner to your first real tattoo. Now, you get out of it what you put into it, so the more you want it, the harder you have to work. I've personally seen results and witnessed results from other Tattooing 101 members that are nothing short of spectacular! The Facebook forum, included in your program, has also been very helpful and supportive and it's a great group of aspiring tattooists. Get the course you won't be disappointed.

I tried the traditional apprenticeship route and just kept getting shown the door. I decided to take things in to my own hands and signed up for Tattooing 101 and haven’t looked back. Im taking my time going through all the modules and really taking everything in. Im extremely happy with the choice I made to pursue this option.

I can’t comment on the value of this course, but my long term experience as a professional educator tells me that you can have the best educational provision in the world and still learn sub optimally, something like joining a first class gym and still not getting in shape.

If you are taking this course I would say supplement with other material, with other tattoo, design and drawing tuition. Consider yourself an ACTIVE LEARNER, not just a passive receiver. All the theory in the world WILL NOT on its own make you a great tattooer. You need the drawing, the designing, the tattoo exercises, real tattooing….basically all the that stuff that allows YOU to make mistakes, realise them and set about rectifying them. Without this diagnostic process and the ability to focus and apportion your efforts on YOUR greater learning needs, any generic course will help you more in some areas and not others, essentially the ones you need (how does the course know you need them?). Even if you identify a learning need and rewatch .that video’, you’re just getting the same information in the same way that you failed to implement previously…what then? Multiple instruction resources give you a better shot at understanding on your terms, and physical practise will allow you to ‘work stuff out’, for which the retention rates are astronomically better than sitting and listening to anything.

I’m not knocking courses, I follow courses, but engage proactively and bring something, and you will definitely develop.

Absolutly, and i think raising interesting questions come mostly through the actual work (manual or intellectual) you put in it.
Answers will come from various sources but the proof is when you check by yourself.
Damn' i've only slept 2 hours and i'm not sure wether if i'm unclear or just putting nonsense here not to fall asleep...

Peace,

I’m planning on starting the course. I’ve been practicing for nearly a year and I’m ready to take it to the next level. I live in Montana and the state requires a license. To get the license you need to provide “apprentice ship documentation.” Does this course count for that documentation? Please let me know! Appreciate you, Nathan!

I don't know where you're from but any state I've ever been in you have to do a one to three year apprenticeship in a actual licensed tattoo shop before you can get a license, home tattooing is going to get you nowhere . In the state of Tennessee it is actually illegal and they can arrest you for it .This program may give you tips and pointers on how to tattoo but the board of health is not going to take that in lieu of an actual apprenticeship. Good luck on your journey.

This thread got me thinking now too.
I been learning from doing “follow along” on YouTube
Just basic stuff , doesn’t really teach much about shading so far
Just stipple shading and connect lines

I might do the program myself later down the track
