So I've done a few tattoos on skin now and I've noticed with ointment and overhead lighting the skin gets a very harsh glare that makes it really hard to see where my needles are hitting. Is there a secret to lighting or do I just need to learn to deal with it??

Get a movable lamp that you can move during the tattoo (ensure that any areas you will be touching are protected and change gloves whenever you adjust the lamp,) I find that to stop the glare, adjust your lamp so it doesn't shine directly down onto the area being tattooed, but onto the area from an angle so the light reflects away from your eyes.

Hi,
I use a led headlamp on which you can vary the intensity.
I only work with the lowest intensity and as Pete said, i wear it in an angle so it's not reflecting in my eyes.
Too much ointment may also be a part of your problem, i diminished the portion i use a lot since i started tattoing and it helped in many good ways.

Peace,

Also, i always touch the skin very softly before i go in, so there's a little ink deposit over (not inside) the skin, so i know where my needle is gonna enter the skin.

Peace,

Thanks I'll have to give that a shot!
