So I know everyone has their method of healing tattoos, and i wanted to hear it.
I'm designing a sheet to give to clients, to serve as a healing guide and there's some doubts i always had.
What i usually do/recommend is:

1- After finishing the tattoo, i wrap it in film and tell them to remove it when they get home . I tell them to treat the tattoo as a open wound and don't touch it, and that they should leave it uncovered for the maximum time possible so it can breathe and heal faster. To only cover it in cling film to prevent it for touching something, like when you sleep.
How long is this necessary to keep covering the tattoo though? Just for the first day? 1 week?

2- Remove the cling film. Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and unscented, alcohol-free soap, to remove the blood/ink/plasma that came out (if any). Dry with with a paper towel, patting it instead of wiping.

3- Cover it in a thin layer of Bepanthene Plus or whatever tattoo-specific cream/lotion they have. I had two clients who had simple (line) tattos, wanted to use coconut oil and they healed fine; i've been reading about it and i think i'll start recommending it too. I usually them to do it until it heals, 2 times a day, that what's important is that the tattoo never dries up.
Do you recommend applying cream/lotion since the first day? And for how long, 2 weeks?

4- No beach/pool for at least 2 weeks, no direct sun exposure. I usually say the optimal time to heal would be one month, but i guess it depends on the complexity of the tattoo.

Also, I say that during the first week it's when you have to be most careful, wash it most (as described above) and avoid removing scabs. During the second week, the skin will become very dry and feel tighter, the scabs will start flaking off and it'll itch. Moisturizing it can help with the itching, and you should do it whenever the tattoo feels dry , and should never scratch or peel the scabs. Week 3, the outermost layer of skin is mostly healed and all you need to do is keep hidrating it, itwill proabably look dull-ish, the colors/blacks will come back once the skin is fully regenerated.

Do you agree with this method?
This is what i usually recommend, but i see so many different ways of doing it that it gets me confused, even more since i'm a beginner, so I could totally be doing something wrong.
I know it's not an exact science but i wanted to hear your way of doing things, and especially learn the reasoning behind it.

Why cover when sleeping? Covering a tattoo allows bacteria inside to grow and you've effectively created a petri dish with cling wrap. I cover it when done and tell them that in 40 minutes they can pull it off, wash their tattoo with their fingertips and antibacterial soap, then don't wrap it again ever.

2- Remove the cling film. Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and unscented, alcohol-free soap, to remove the blood/ink/plasma that came out (if any). Dry with with a paper towel, patting it instead of wiping.

I like this

For me...antibacterial CREAM. Nothing petroleum based because that will pull ink from the skin and give you that tacky, goopy tattoo that sticks to your sheets. I do that for two days. After that, unscented lotion for the duration of the healing process.

2 weeks no pool/lake/beach. Only because it's still technically an open would and you don't want to expose it to yuck. Honestly, if we are doing our job right 7 days is more than enough. See thoughts on unscented lotion to cover your secondary thoughts.

My answers in bold.

I think in general giving a basic set of guidelines is all you can do. Everyone will do what they want once they leave anyway. :)

I remember when i did my first tattoo, in a well known downtown studio with a well known tattoo artist who told me to keep reapplying the film for a week :censored:
But yeah I heard that reasoning before too. I was just wondering what's worse, wrapping the tattoo for a couple of hours or letting it touch everything while it's still healing. But i guess the cling wrap also makes it warmer which is better for the bacteria to reproduce.

Thanks, that helped. I just spoke to a friend who works at a pharmacy who told me about Cicaplast Balm B5 SPF50, i already had been recommended but forgot about it. I'll start recommending that one!
I'm sure that's what 99% of the people will use Bepanthen though, since they probably have it already. But at least Cicaplast is something that you can very easily find here too and it's not that uncommon either, so i hope that helps convincing them on getting it instead of using Bepanthen.

I agree with you, i guess most people will nod their heads while you explain and then proceed to do the opposite ahah. But there's always people who care, and I wanted to have a guide i could refer to/send them, so i could be consistent on what i recommend.

Thank you!

My 2 cents..

I always think it has to be easy, basic and cheap because people are lazy and tight.lol. They spend £hundreds on a tattoo then hop to the pub to show it off to all their friends who poke and prod it with their grubby fingers.lol.

I had my first tattoo 30 yrs ago and i wasnt told anything like this at all. And yet no one I know died from a tattoo either.
Knowledge gets better and so have tattoos but the basics are the same.
keep it clean because its an open wound. Thats what we need to drill into peoples heads because that is very easy to remember.

A lot of guys i know wouldnt know bepanthen or unscented soap if you poured them a pint of it.lol.

Personally ive always used bepanthen because its a gentle all rounder and no other reason.
Me and everyone I know inc pros also wrap in clingfilm for first 2 nights to stop rubbing in bed. all other times leave uncovered. Accidentally scraping those soft tops off a freshly healing tattoos is surely worse than slower healing or the very rare chance of funky bacteria.
But number 1 has to be wash gently with non scented soap , dab dry with a paper towel. then some moisture. 2 to 3 times a day for a week.
We can debate the best cream or soap, or how long or when to cover to keep it crisp fresh long and long lasting but cleanliness has to be key.

I know Tex doesnt believe me but I am a fan of the K.I.S.S. principle especially when dealing with people.

K. Keep
I. It
S. Simple
S. Stupid

Wash dry moisturise. no sun sand or swimming. I coined that Months ago after trying to explain why i washed my tattoo while in my mates house.

Minimum 3 days up to 5
Hot compress (3+/day)
Gently wash/blot
Sent them home with an extra piece... Apply that
3-5 days, hot compress

Usually almost to completely healed by now. If not then unscented lotion (lubriderm), coconut oil, or whatever commercial product that has worked for them in the past.

Stay away from killers... Sun, chlorine, etc

I've been told so many different things..!

What i do is i clean the tattoo, put some wound disinfection product on it, make it disappear under Bepanthen, before i wrap it into plastic and ask peeps to keep it that way for 24 hours.
After that, clean with unscented soap and water, with your fingertips, gently. Use Bepanthen when it gets dry, continue until it's healed.
Use solar cream if you have to, after a week, before that just cover the tattoo under your clothes.
Don't swim, sand, stay 15 mins in your shower.

But pro tattoers never told me to do anything the same.

What i'm gonna do is ask my son, how's studying to become a doctor, and we'll see what he has to say.

Peace,

Hot compress is AWESOME! I'll recommend that to anyone that gets a lot of color packed it. I don't know the science behind it, but it helps prevent scabbing in those big packed areas. When I had my forearm done it was 6 1/2 hours of wall to wall color. Did a hot compress twice a day for the first few days and I really think it made a difference. Just pulls the plasma or something...not sure.

And Ronan73 I love the KISS approach. I've been writing training materials for years and that's always been the best way to help people learn. I'm a big fan of foundational learning...start small and work your way up.

and yeah...30 years ago the care instructions were "That'll be $100". :)

"..30 years ago the care instructions were "That'll be $100". ??

I remember waiting for my mate coop at a place called dragon tattoo. Bit of a biker vibe. (now closed)
As he walked out I asked if it was all done...
Coop shrugged and said .." I think so, the guy just walked off"
The tattooist then came out from the toilet and coop asked him if he had finished and the artist said " What else do you want? " Then went back into the back room and shut the door.lol
Left us stood there like spare parts.lol.

Now thats service.lol. And that place had the best reputation around.lol.

hot compress.. Like this?

Our place was called Patricks. Same vibe...same great customer service. We didn't care, he'd tattoo anybody. :)

I just take a wash cloth, run it under the sink as hot as I can stand it, then hold it on there until it cools. Pat it dry and go on with your day.

The hot towel PT mentioned is fine.

When I apprenticed I was a shop apprentice. There were 4 of us at a 24/7 shop in Vegas. So I learned a lot of different, sometimes conflicting things.

One of the artists only wrapped clients because it was state regulation to do so. She preferred no after care at all other than the hot compress.

She said it helps bring blood to the area to heal (which is why I adopted it even though I use derm). And because she didn't recommend product it kept the area clean and had less scabbing.

She was scouted for ink masters tv and last I looked works at Revolt Tattoo in las Vegas.

As a side note to the derm. My girlfriend got sunburned so bad whilst visiting her family a few weeks ago that her legs had huge blisters.

She was suffering for a few days and I finally convinced her to put derm on. 3 days later it came off. No blisters, slightly red still. Won't scar
