Hello, this week i'll use a mag for the first time (a curved one) and i want to make this kind of shades.

Is there some kind of movements i shouldn't be doing? In yt videos they seem pretty random, but im scared to leave rought marks on the skin instead of that smooth shade

Obs: i've trained on fake skin, but i've been told its harder to get smooth tones in it

can you make those kinds of shades with a regular mag? Or a round shader?

The needles only do what you make them do. If you can't do that already, the needle isn't going to fix your technical deficit.

hope that didn't sound ugly...but it sounds like you are asking for the curved magnum to fix existing problems.

If you ask me, curved mags are great for doing soft shading - and easy to use. Just remember to be light on your hand. Furthermore, the cat picture you show is pretty much solid black, so it's hard to fail. You can go over the skin pretty many times with a curved mag, and pretty easily give the shading a nice finish. But as said - light hand.

#Edit: Just read Mark's comment, and if you already have issues with shading, you'd better keep on practicing before going over to human skin.

and I blew up the cat pick...that's not smooth shading that's gray ink. :)
That’s exactly what I was thinking when I looked at it. I thought there maybe a little tiny bit of white put in it too.
It might be an opaque gray instead of the white.

I think i can, at least w the curved mag. My hand was very light at the fake skin, i was trying to slowly build up the tone and a lot of my strokes were so superficial i almost culdnt see the ink in the fake skin. So i should aim for a little more depht since the real skin has more resistance.... right???
I've never used any mg on real skin so i dont know what its like, but im scared that when i try to go a little deeper i'll make some kind of wrong hand movement that will leave a mark. Is there some specific movement that is best to leave smooth tones? Like circular, pendulum

Yes...move away from real skin. that is the specific movement you should try for now. Not forever.

let's see the practice skin...because it sounds like you are just hoping it work.

Why don't you try your magnum with water instead of ink?
It'll answer some of your questions about skin resistance, and how a magnum hits the skin.

If you can build a gradient and some sweet shading with different brushes, pencils, markers and charcoal, you could try it out.
If not, just practice on paper and fake skin to get it nailed in your hand's memory.
You could really mess up the skin big time, as well as your design, take your time!

Peace,

start off with medium washes and add your dark and black shades in the areas that need contrast. I’d use a 15 curve mag bug pin.

Thanks a lot! That was really helpfull

Well the client bailed on me, but i did it anyways on the practice skin

Here's the result, sorry for the mess, but this fake skin is rlly hard to clean, it threw me off a little before i realise it. I focused only on the shades of the cat's body with a 9mgr. What should i focus on to improve?

From what I can see, you're missing the ink "splatters" around the cat. To me, those give it character. Also you appear to be missing whiskers.

Technically, I'm not sure how to critique this so I'll leave it at that.

What kind of needle/ink/machine did you use?

You're right, but i didnt want to use my last rl on fake skin hahah. I focused only on practicing my shades with the curved mag 9MGR, pure black (should have used a medium wash first, but i wanted to see the results varying just my hand pressure)
I used a brazilian machine called otzi inverter

it's going to be hard on practice skin to achieve what you can do on real skin because of the pressure it takes to get into into fake skin. I think that was a good effort...just remember to have a super light hand around the edges. if you just "tickle" the skin you can build it up.
