Okay so I'm absolutely new to this, have a long background in art, design, carving, etching, but I decided to get a tattoo pen. Just got it and of course I thought what better way to learn than to practice. So my issue is I'll outline something but when I clean the area, 90% of the ink dissapears so I'm left with lines that look more like scratch lines

Hi Misael,

You’re probably not quite deep enough or your hand speed is too fast for your machine speed.

If you go premium and search the threads you’ll find a lot of the questions you have when you’re starting out have already been answered ?

What equipment do you have? And what surface are you tattooing on?

Not a good idea to tattoo real skin just yet, you need to learn the basics as well as hygiene, Your problem is technique, stretch, depth, put some hours in on synthetic skin while you are learning infection control etc
Any recommendations for synthetic skins? I'm just skeptical of the consistency of the actual material if it absorbs the ink as it should.

Reelskin is a great fake skin to practice on. You really need to slow down and stop thinking your the next ink master and stop tattooing your self or others. I know I have been there done that. Learn basics, get a premium membership here, watch videos on you tube. There is a lot to learn and a lot of people on here that can help.

What kind of tattoo pen did you buy? What kind of needles are you trying to use (brand)? What tattoo needle groupings are you using? Post pictures of your work, this can help a lot for us to help.

Dont be skeptical of fake skin, just try it. Yes it is a little expensive but never would it be more expensive than Human skin and wearing a good tattoo.

Try go deeper and if you can.
up the needles speed or move slower while lining I'm new but I found moving slower or upping the speed helps and go slightly deeper
Hope I help

I know how that feels!! I only started a few months ago too and I was bursting to do something on myself!

I’m not sure what’s happened with yours? It looks raised so I guess you’re not just scratching the surface? Maybe an ink flow issue? Inconsistent depth? Could be bad quality ink/equipment?

How far do you have the needle hanging out of the tube?

I don’t know to be honest but I’d hold back and save your own skin until you’ve got it sorted on fake skin.

Some of the more advanced guys might have a better idea.

right now you're so afraid of making mistakes you're making all of them.

You can't stretch that part of the arm and tattoo yourself with the other hand...there's one

You don't want to go too deep...so you're too shallow. there's another

You still are not sure where the needle is going to end up, so your lines are doubled vision...oops

congrats...you're doing everything we've all done in the beginning.

so now you slow down, learn a little, practice on some pig/reelskin, then go back after YOUR THIGHS. This shit stays on you forever...and I know you're tough and punk rock now and fuck the man and what anyone thinks about your tattoos...but you'll be glad you didn't cover your arms with shitty tattoos once you learn to actually tattoo.

Start with the basics. Watch videos on this website. It goes over everything from how to properly remove gloves to cleaning and bloodborne pathogens. The training is free, you just have to pay for the certificate.

I’d definitely stop and listen to what everyone who has been doing this for while is saying. Don’t just go start tattooing all over the place for the experience. You can get that on reelskin, the synthetic stuff, trust me. I tattooed in prison a bunch but using the real equipment is a whole new ball game. I’ve had to relearn everything again and it was only because of the help that I’ve gotten from this forum. You’ll pick up stuff from other peoples threads a lot. At least I do. Get some reelskin and start with small, simple stuff. Then you’ll progress forward.

Youtube has a lot good tattoo vids these days ... try tattoo an orange first .. then fake skin .. then your own skin .. do not tattoo any friends.
If you go into skin .. the quality of the needles and ink make a huge difference .. always get the best needles and ink .. you ow that to your future clients ..
And then ofc the obvious .. handspeed .. needle speed .. skin stretching

Start with some pig skin if you can (local butcher may have some) or fruit, then progress to rubber skins (often called fake skin) such as reelskin, then and only after a lot of practice, progress to yourself if you feel ready. But before all this, learn about machines (setting up, care, types and uses), needles and cartridges (group sizing and uses), inks , and most important "Hygiene" both work tools and area and client care. It takes a while but its worth going the right path before any friends or you get damaged, badly tattooed or in the worse case infections.
The premium sections have all the info and more, spend a while in there ;)
