Hey guys.
I just recently got into tattooing and I've been practising on fake skin and going really well so far, I got a sample pack of cartridges that I've been using but before I make my 1st order of needles I just wanted to know your thoughts on if It's easier for a beginner to just stick to the one size gauge? Just so I stay consistent. I was thinking about going 10 guage in everything with maybe a 5rl, 9rl, 11rl and a few different curved mags? Or is 12 guage a better way to go for beginners? Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks :)

I wouldn’t go 10 gauge unless you’re only doing soft/smooth shaded work, otherwise stick with 12s.

I know what you mean about making initial purchases, you can end up spending a lot and then find you don’t necessarily need all that you bought.

IF you’re only practising on fake skin you can do worse than buy carts or needles from AliExpress…though I would not use them on living things. Some suppliers (there) do sell carts in 10s at roughly the same price, and they’re a lot cheaper than those (I imagine) you will get in Oz, I’m in the Uk.

To start out I’d get some smaller round liners, 3s or 5s, then some 7s or 9s. I’d also aim for a bit of contrast so probably not 5s and 7s.

For packing, a flat 9 mag is a good all rounder and curved mags if you’re looking to blend or shade. It’s actually a disadvantage to use curved mags for solid packing, though you’ll certainly see people doing it.
