Hi all, iv been practicing a lot on large fills on the old pig skin and rubber shite but it seems to be taking ages to actually get anywhere, im using 18rs the biggest they do but would using mags or flats be any better? Rather ask before spending money on both.

Thanks andy :)

Hey Andy. Solid fills take ages end of. Fair enough, there are certain needles that do jobs better than others but, to get a really good fill you should work in tiny circles doing around 5-10mm at a time until area is coloured. What do you describe as a large area? I only ask as practice skins aren't that big, nor is pig skin (when cut down for practice anyway.

Are your machines running well?

And who says 18rs are the biggest they do? You can get a 100rs needle, prob even bigger maybe, but, an 18rs is still pretty Damm big.

As for what is better, I (my opinion not everyone's) prefer double stacked mags over flats, but again, it really depends on the size AND shape of the piece you are filling.

Hope this helps a little

Slowly, slowly, catchy monkey!

An 18 rs is quite a meaty configuration, 18 needles not separated by much, you need a punchy machine to drive that home, a mag will give you more surface area with less needles, my favourite grouping for solid fills is a 7 mag, the bigger you go, the more thump you need to get each tip to penetrate, of course it can be done, but sometimes going smaller and slower = actually going faster overall for a solid field.

Hi thanks for the fast replies and great video, one of the links don't work though. Im just practicing shapes at the moment like squares circles all like half the size of the rubber skin, im just trying to keep the colour constant and even that's what im practicing at the moment. Iv just invested in 3 new hoodlum machines which came ready set up with minor adjustment. And I was just looking on barber dts website and that's the biggest they do :icon_eek: but I suppose you can make any size needle given the skill. I think ill have to invest in a few different groupings of needles and see what i like best.

Thanks andy :icon_biggrin:
