Many times i have looked at a stainless steel tip and felt it was too fat or its excess side walls made it hard to determine the actual position of the needles when when shading up to line work as opposed to being fooled by the tip..only to find you left a gap of unshaded area which needs to be done again...
At first i used to try and buy the best tips (most expensive also!) and compensated for the tips when shading...but just lately i have started filing some down to make them far more accurate when determining were my needle groupings actually are....of course it all depends where you get your tips from....in the end this is just something i like to do...
here's a simple way to improve any tip and facilitate shading .....the most important thing to remember is that after filing the Stainless steel tips, they need to be finely polished using wet and dry then polishing compound to remove ALL scratches (which could potentially harbour virus or bacteria etc)...its easy to do and i find the tips much easy to work with especially in fine details or buffing up to line work etc..
Here is my original flat 5 tip (fat and ugly)...then after the process the end results show a much improved tip....click any pic for a larger image...
