Hey Guys, I was just wondering what needle sizes / groupings you just simply couldn't do without?

I mean, most people starting out seem (in my experience, just an observation) seem to start lining with 3 + 5 RL's (what comes in lots of starter kits) see every little imperfection, move up to 7 + 9Rl's to get a more consistent line - good for not losing confidence etc and then the shading is done with round groupings again - 7, 9,11,14RS before moving onto flats and mags

Would you agree to a point?

I myself have experience with flats and i have just recieved some 15 mags today which I will be trying out on piggy in the morning.

could anyone be so kind to list 10x types they favour? I would like to eventually try all types obviously but it would be great to see what is most commonly used amongst everyone on the site

Thank you in advance for any responses,

Dave :icon_lol:

After a day with AJ @ utat i now use 3,5,9 rl, 7rs and 9, 15 mag. He said try all types but these groupings will do anything you need to. pointless paying for lots of different sizes when you can do the same job with 6.

Yes I used 3rl and it was soooo hard to lay down a hard nice bold line. But practice made me to the point I can do it on a single pass, therefor I know I could do some killer linework with a 7rl or a 9rl, I'm planning on buying a lot of them soon. As for shading I use a 11 curved mag and I caught on after like 3 tattoos. Lol I plan on buying a smaller size though for smaller tattoos.

i favour 5 or 7 liners but with the hawk a 5 is like a 3 and 7 is more like a 5 but if it is bigger then go onto a 9rl and for shading i only ever use a 13 round shader, 7 and 13 round mags, i can do most things with them.

Thats great guys, real useful info for me! Was just doing a little stock-take (lol) to make sure I don't get caught short one day and be left forced to compromise the ink or not be able to even attempt it and I noticed that I dont have loads of sizes/groupings

I currently have 3,5,14 RS, 3,5,7,9 RL 6F, 13M and now 15M.

I find myself using 5,7 and 9RL's and 14 RS's for most of my practice but now I am comfortable with them all, I am now going to learn how to make clean passes with a 3RL and now the mags.

Thanks again for the help, I really do appreciate it!!!

I use 5RL, 7RL, 14RL, 14RS, 18RS, 5F, 7M, 15M, often. And once in a while 3RL, 1RL, and 25M. I plan to order up some curved mags and bug-pins soon, as they seem to be the hot new item.. lolz
