Might be a stupid question but how long do printed stencils last when they're stored in a clean dry place? I have a few clients that I've agreed to commute to and while I do have a portable printer, it's stupid old and kind of unreliable... In the future, I'd ideally, love to have stencil ready to go before clients reach my place or if I go to theirs. Should just hand draw the stencil when I get set up or take a chance on my rig ? Would love some advice. 😬 (To Clarify: the sizes are all predetermined and my clients know this)

When I used to mobile tattoo I carried my thermal stencil printer, a portable inkjet printer and my laptop with me, the laptop had my designs and drawings on it which I could then print on my inkjet printer and then make a stencil on my thermal printer....I'm assuming people with ipads and the like can probably print directly to some brands of thermal printers. (Always make sure you take electrical extension leads and maybe a power board with you to connect everything to the power, I often found out the hard way when arriving at a clients place, the power outlet would be away from where a good area was to tattoo) I gave up mobile tattooing mainly because of the health issues connected with it, it's never good to be tattooing in a kitchen with a couple of snotty nosed kids running around.
I always found it difficult to have a stencil already made up, mainly because when you get there the client always says "can you make it bigger/smaller or can you alter the design to fit better"
I think stencils already prepared can last a long time if stored in a dry environment, I would probably lay them flat between pages of a scrap book.

I’m not sure that there’s any lifespan on stencils, certainly not in the days, weeks or months realm.

Whe I first started tattooing, stencil machines didn't exist or were very new and not widely used. Pretty much most tattoos then were done off flash and at the size you saw it on the wall. Some more enterprising tattooers that were located near to copy shops (yep they were a thing) would nip round and re-scale on a photo copier.

So after laboriously hand stencilling, many tattooers would not only keep stencils over time, but they would also use a stencil multiple times. I certainly did this myself. I know that wouldn’t fly now with much improved sanitation knowledge regs, as you would have shaved the area before applying the stencil, but like many other questionable practices, it happened.
