I did my first ankle band tattoo the other day, and it took almost an hour and a half to get the stencil right! What techniques do you guys use for getting a stencil that wraps around the ankle (or arm) to line up correctly?
I havent done any but I'm guessing I'd probably cut the paper out to the exact length and size of the tattoo. Then make the design using the exact size of the paper I cut. Then I'd check it's all ok. And put Mark's on part of the stencil and part of the skin so you know where they all match up then I guess as long as all the Mark's are then lined up properly put the stencil solution on and re apply the stencil.
Ankles, wrists, forearm, anything which wraps will be tricky because the body part is tapered and not perfectly straight all the way down, if you are doing a continuous pattern then it is nearly impossible to match end to end of the pattern, we usually free hand the last bits in.
There is a video on you tube somewhere showing a technique whch i often use which is cutting slits in the stencil on the lower part so it over laps, this also works great on elbows ?
