I usually, (well always) hand trace my stencils from the original flash, but am looking for a comp program to possibly do this for me and i can then run it through my thermal machine. What would you recommend for a good program?

Paint.net is the one I like. You can "pencil sketch" a color pic and get a good outline from it. This was done with it.

and it's free.

i use both paint.net and photoshop to good effect.

As Mark said, use the pencil sketch filter on paint.net and it produces fairly clean outline drawings

On photoshop, click image > mode > Greyscale then filter > photocopy.... then tweak the darkness and detail sliders until you get the best image :icon_biggrin:

Corel paint shop pro is very good, takes some playing around with it, but when you get it right it's worth it. The quickest and easiest way I know is paint.net, great program.

IrfanView also works fairly well and is freeware. My "go to" image software is Microsoft Digital Image Suite 2006. I also have Photoshop CS5, it's a great program but I don't have half a clue how to use it's features (I have found Apple based software to be very counter-intuitive for me). I used to use Paint.net a few years ago but I switched to MS Digital Image. I'll have to check the new version to see how it fairs in stencil making.
