So done a tattoo today and as i dont really get on to well with light shades i used solid black, but even then i had to go over it so much it become red and although it finally went in you can see its not solid and a few gaps here and there.

i turned my machine up high, i used plenty of ink, i used a curved royal magnum, needle was out more than 2mm so i could see it go in.

im not so bad with touch ups as il keep going over it but this was my first stencil taking a good few hours

also my lines were terrible, even though i could see clearly what i was doing, i just cant help but not make a straight line... i mean if its on paper il use a ruler...

no man, don get upset, its just way easier to get good reply when we see the picture and clear question, going premium will able this option to you, plus sometimes it take time for people to reply, for some of us is night now lol, anyways, could you clarify your question better? tell what supplies you wor with what machine and ink? question how to shade is too big to be answered by me for sure. Do research, prectice, and share your work man, dont get upset because is not what you expect :) peace man and be humble.

Upgrading to premium would allow you to post pics so we can see what your talking about (as we are all visual artists here, pics are worth more than 1000 words).

It will give you access to material that will answer the questions you have.

It will show that you are not some tire kicker or troll.

This site is an indispensable resource & premium (of which the $ is used just to pay for the site) is a nothing expense considering that less than a 15 years ago you would not have found a community that is experienced & willing to share.

Nobody is getting richer with users getting premium, the money is used to maintain the website and pay for bandwith.
There are even calls to donations because we are using it a lot.
What we gain by premium is posting pics, and a fantastic archive of many years of beginners questions, and those beginners are now helping newbies like you and me.
I didn't check lately but when i signed it was 10 or 15$ for life. I've been lurking in basic mode for a year and been very distrustful of what was actually hapenning behind the curtains. I don't regret any pence of it.

We answer to basic members, but usually get the same questions which have been answered 10000 times in premium.

So premium is not some kind of elitist room, more communism if you ask me.

Peace,

DKJ

Hey I’m not super experienced so it could be a lot of things many I can only speculate about, but my guesses would start with:
#1 the strech - are you stretching the skin enough? What part of the body are you tattooing?
#2 the technique - hand speed? Maybe you’re going too fast? Are you trying to pack in shading? It may be best to try to move in night circles and spread out from a single area
#3 the ink - is it maybe watered down? Are you dipping too much?

other guesses:
Could you maybe have overworked the skin and the swelling pushed the ink out? I don’t know but what if your machine was too high and that caused more trauma which pushed the ink out?
Those are my guesses I’m not a professional but maybe it could be some of those things

To answer your initial reply, packing is quite simple but requires a lot of patience.

You should put your volts down (if on a rotary, dunno coils), instead of up. You may damage the skin with all those passes, so get softer with multiple passes.

Then, you could slowly build a little area, then go to another one, etc, etc... You can use the shovel or little circles move, what fits you better. But don't rush it! Take your time.

There's a tip to spot where you didn't pack well, if i remember it well: make a bubble with your soap and all the missed part should highlight.

Peace,

I don’t have premium and I’ve just started my apprenticeship.
Yet what I’ve gathered from my small knowledge and the techniques ive been shown.. as already said the tortoise won against the hare, go slower with more precision.

practice ya lines !!!
Go back to basics and colour drawings in pencil. Get that mojo back!

Most of all, love what you do and listen to yourself. Ya know what’s up
