Hello brothers and sisters of ink :)

I am currently using a pen type machine (a CNC-M-2 to be precise) with cartridges and was wondering if anyone could gimme a few pointers when using larger grouping round shaders (14 for instance) for this type of setup.

The reason why I ask is because I was working on my fake skin earlier trying to get colour in to a fairly large area in as few passes as possible (without much luck unfortunately) and I found myself wondering...

- How much needle do I need to have sticking out when I'm running the machine using a round shader for colour packing?
- What's the depth do I need to go to when colour packing, is it the same principle as a liner where I am looking to just get the tip of that needle into the skin?
- For those larger needle groupings do I need to apply more voltage to push that extra surface area into the skin and does it require additional hand pressure too?
- And finally do I need to float or ride the tube when colour packing with a round shader?

If anyone could pop by and potentially answer any of those questions I've been mulling over I'd be immensely grateful!

Thanks for taking the time to read my post too :)

I don’t use round shader for colour packing ,I prefer mags ,so I don’t know if anything I say will help you , you still need to achieve the same depth in the skin for the ink to take 1.5 -2mm ,
I have my needle throw at 2mm when colour packing but I ride the tip on the skin , so I should have the perfect depth so then I just need to work on my technique, tight circles or the shovel technique
you may need to add more hand pressure or volts to get a good penetration with a larger grouping with mags I usually lower my volts to around 8-8.5 , where my lining volts might be 9-11 depending on the machine

This dude uses a lot of big round shaders in his work (not common but he achieves some really unique looking shading and he's quick). Not sure if his videos can help with color packing but he does do some black and grey work with them. Not super in depth tutorials but still nice and up close so you can see how deep he goes and hamd motion. Hope that helps!

Hi!

I use round shaders only for little packing, little areas, or else it's magnums.

I also use RS to the limits of my lining, the outside of the big packing areas. I always end my lining by putting a lighter under my lining needle to expand/broader it, then i pack the tiny places and angles.
After that i pack with a RS the contour next to the lines, then i pack all that is left with a magnum.

In fact i do it like if i was inking a drawing. Lines, then tiny brush next to the lines, then big brush to pack what's left.

I think i did a post on that, not sure if it was a reply or a full post.

Peace,

DKJ

Thanks for the responses everyone, it's much appreciated! :)

I feel you all actually, I think mags for bigger areas is a good shout so I'll start applying the recommendations you have all given me to using more mags in my work (don't know why but I'm kinda scared of using them as people say you should avoid mags when starting out but I guess it doesn't really matter on practice skins)

But for the smaller more delicate areas I'll continue to use a RS, should the needle throw on a RS be similar to that of a mag at around 2mm riding the tip?

Apart from lining and smaller areas are there any other useful ways of using a RS?

Thanks as always for reading and responding :)

18rs is one of my favorite groupings. I don't do anything different really....just use it. same depth as a mag, or a smaller round shader. I do like Envy's traditional RS line because of the shorter taper. Feel like it saturates well with very little penetration

Thank you for the clarification brother, do you feel it's better to float or ride when using round shaders and mags btw?

shading I don't think it matters. If you can control your depth let some hang. I never let too much hang out though....and my hands are VERY light. I don't push...I let the machine dance on top of the skin.
