Okay so I am trying to figure out what it is that I'm doing wrong, my lining is fine but when I try to pack color/shade it hurts so f bad. I have tried turning it down to 6 and up to 8.. Ink drops and stays in but I can't take the pain. I've got tattoos by many other artist and if anything shading felt good done by them.

What machine are you using? You aren’t trying to shade with a liner are you? Some of them hit really hard and are not meant to be used that way

depth issue?
Are you snagging needles?
do you have a barbed needle?

EZAvant has a maxxon motor. I shade at 10 with my maxxon machine. I line at 13. maybe you are just snagging and ripping?

If your using a 17 mag at 33cpc the needle hits 34000 times a minute, thats why it might hurt a bit , also tattooing yourself all ways hurts more

I'm not a pen guy yet.

First hit in s quick search

Says to shade n pack around 5 to 6. Ez's official site days the same thing.

But from what I'm understanding about rotaries and experiencing on my Centri is that the voltage controls speed and stroke length controls hit force. I was opening up stroke hoping to jam color in and I was over working skin. I closed it up and can now make multiple passes with ease. Really working the shading.

The avant has a pretty standard 3.5 cam. So I couldn't tell you what to do there.
