So I have no tattoo experience and am going through the learning process. I purchased a 30 dollar solong tattoo kit with one basic coil machine, needles, and ink and I understand the quality of products will affect outcome.

my question is around color packing. Granted I’m only using a 3rl and 5rs that came with the kit but is it possible to get dep blacks in fake skin? Does the quality of the fakeskin come into play or my application and technique or I simply need to spend more time working the areas I want darker and build it up? The image attached is 2hrs of simple work and I stopped to critique

Check out the work i've done so far -> Learning how to Tat

there is some variance between ink brands and skins also technique is important, but i wouldnt be so concerned about the saturation. it is just fakeskin, u can play around with different inks and skins, but all u need is to make one spot as dark as possible~ to full saturation and just use that as your baseline reference for 100%black.

getting solid black into fake skin would have you turning real flesh into hamburger meat. Remember that...it's not the same. While I love all the synthetic work...it's just drawing. It's a great way to determine if you are shakey or moving your hand too fast when you try to shade...but it's not a fair translation to real skin as a whole.

Timmy is the king of AMAZING synthetic work...but the time it takes to get his level of work makes MalligaMallan look fast. :)

I fought that for a while thinking there had to be something. Then I realized that I had adjusted every possible variable and the only thing left was "this is how fake skin is". Now, instead of trying for black, I try for consistent and even coverage.

Another thing is that I was using a lining ink for a while which made it even harder. I've since been given a lot of black meant for color packing and it's a lot easier to stay consistent.

Yes I totally agree. I have tried a few small lines on myself and have learned much about the differences between the fake skin and actual skin contact. Super different. I went ahead and purchased Kuro sumi ink and I love the vibrance compared the starter kit. But I now notice it does say outline ink so perhaps I should invest in black specified for color packing. Thank you so much for the info.

Yep, sumi is what I was using at first since it's what I bought for lining. Lining ink is a lot thinner than packing/coloring ink.
