Hello got a few shading questions about when shading for first pass do u go to your depth then the next passes do u go to same depth or just barely touch the skin?
and for lighter shades do u keep same hand speed as doing dark shades or dip in lightest shade and go faster hand speed and do u keep same depth or more shallow for lighter shades?
and for needle hang is it better to have needle out or ride tube with shading mags?
and for rotary s is it better to use short or long stroke for shading?
and stretching is it more of a stretch for dark and less of a stretch for lighter shades?

Thanks for reading and hope to get some feed back to these questions to help me out...

Take what I say with a grain of salt as I'm learning too. I struggled with this for a long time, and only recently have felt comfortable shading, and only on certain areas of the body. Also, I'm being taught with a rotary fyi.

As far as getting a lighter shade on the first pass, If you have the your shading at your normal shading voltage, you can get lighter shades by just moving your hand faster, or you can keep your hand speed the same and raise the voltage, though I think quicker hand movements is easier.

At the end of my shading I'll usually lower the depth for my mag so its barely sticking out, and kind of brush over certain areas that have very light tones or subtle transitions.

As fore stretching, you definitely want to be stretching the skin when shading, some areas need less than others. For instance, I was shading some line work tattoo a friend of mine had on his chest. The first session was an absolute disaster as I could not understand why I was not getting the results I expected, and it was because I was not stretching the skin enough, which led to rough and inconsistent marks. When he came back in, I was able to fix what I'd done as my mentor had told me what I had done wrong. It still wasn't easy, but it made a huge difference.

When I did a tattoo on my buddy's forearm, I barely had to stretch the skin because it was so taught already, it felt like working on a fake skin almost lol.

The training manual is not intended to be a tell all go by word for word instructions bible it is a guide to help with training you are already receiving(hopefully) or that you're learning as you go. But take the manual and couple it with asking LOADS of questions in the PREMIUM section and that along with some other guidance and learning you will do fantastic! Again this is my opinion and what worked for ME good luck in your quest for tattooing zenness*????????

Jman,
as previously said, the Premium forum is where you wanna start that many questions.
I was a lurker in basic status for some months and doubted that there was anything interesting in the premium area and one day i thought i was some cheap ass for not letting 10£ go to see what the deal was.
And since, I've been tattooing, i'm onto my 10th tattoo on real skin, in 3/4 months, and i can ask a question during a tattoo at 2 in the morning and have some answers!

I know it sounds like "join the cult and be enlightened" but it's the best bucks for your money, and it's waaaaaaaay more active than the basic forum, plus you have access to peeps who have been tattoing from scratch, starting here and successfully working for some years, you can add pictures, it's very motivating...

Well, you do whatever you wanna of course, but all these questions already have been killed, grilled, and served with the best sauces in the Premium section.

Cheers, and Peace,

DKJ
