iv got two cheap kit type clipcords, one is significantly better quality than the other but i'd still like a high quality one for regular use and to keep the others as a backup.

who makes a good clipcord at a good price? i'd need it shipped internationally and some suppliers charge much more than others.

[edit]: it also pisses me off that more than half of the clip cords on the market aren't marked + or - to designate the polarity... I marked my two cables myself but damn...

I have read that the the cable polarity doesn't matter. I mean, that the machine runs either way. Am I wrong? O really don't have an idea

I have the same rotary as you, rw springer. And you're actually right, it does run backwards when polarity is switched. I had no idea till I checked now!

Luckily I haven't used it much, only about 10h or so. How much would it have affected the motor if I would have gone on using it both cw and ccw ??

And thanks for the enlightenment Jay!

Polarity does matter. Some rotaries have polarity protected motors that will only run one way. Stigma motors are polarity protected.

I always run my RW's one way with the + going to the top terminal of the motor, I marked my clip cord myself with + / - , what happens with a DC motor is the brushes in the motor wear a certain way, best to keep it one way.

I cant understand why custom clip cords and foot switches are so expensive and so easy to make yourselves, all the parts are available from Maplins to make your own quality items, cable, plugs, non latching switches, project boxes, heat shrink sleeve etc, or even refurbish your own clip cord.

Years ago we used to make our own, we would use 2 needle bars cut down for the clip cord end, the end with the loop was the part you screwed through the insulator and attached your wire to with a nut and bolt, in place of a spring you can use the soft flexable plastic off just about anything, bucket, washing up liquid bottle etc, cut it in a strip, bend it, attach the needle bar end and cable, insulate with heat sleeve, job done!

Barber DTS sell a FK irons high tensile clip cord which looks ok http://www.barberdts.co.uk/fk-irons-high-tension-clipcord.html#.VUSaQvlViko

sure it'l be fine, theres a 50-50 chance every time you used it that you got it right so that 10h is more like 5... iv heard it said it can cause damage but I wouldn't worry too much if its fine now :D

I figured running it one way then in the opposite direction might wear components more (wiggle effect)

actually i'm pretty handy with a soldering iron, to make it worth doing i'd probably make a few and ebay them or something, the only thing that would concern me is the banana springs? I like the one piece spring designs alot more than loose shabby sides.

I was looking at making my own custom arty brass pedals / bits n pieces at some point in the future once iv got my workshop setup.

[edit]: sorry if that was a bit rude, just frustrating seeing the quality of these cables compared to say... guitar cables, even the cheap ones are normally pretty good quality and custom cables up the yinyang.

I think of it as a record player - it can move both ways (with a little help from a hand), but cw is the right way. Is it the same with tattoomachines or is either way ok, I just have to choose and be consistant?

Y'all are making me nervous! Is it that big a difference between clip cords?!?!? Won't the one I got with my first crappy purchase do?!?!? How can it be that big difference and in what way do you notice the difference?!!?!?! *need some answers here*

A good clip cord takes between 0.5-1 volt off my coil machines to make them run the same as with a cheap one, good ones all work fine, just the one I posted is as good as any of the brand name ones, only cheaper, and has very good tension.

A good clip cord fits snugly on the machine and if the tension of the spring is good as the clip cord moves about / swings you do not get a variation in voltage causing the machine to run inconsistently or even cutting out, also some cheap ones use very thin cable.

I once checked the voltage at the machine end of 2 clip cords of different types and different lengths of cable with a multi meter, the machine did run differently and there was a notable difference in voltage.
