I am looking to open my own shop in Jersey. I'd love to hear what an ideal working environment tattoo artists would love to work in, salary ranges or comp splits etc. Any and all advice is welcome!

In my local uk area the trend is moving away from high yield for shop owners to one that offers pretty fair chair rents.
Not so long back it was difficult to secure anything better than 50% in a tattoo shop, with some kind of supply. The ‘supply’ never included machines and power, sometimes included needles/carts, sometimes ink and glides, but as a bottom line it was a printer, stencil machine and paper, wipes, cleaning liquids, gloves, stencil solution etc.
Right now I can point to 2 city centre studios advertising for artists on a 70:30% split in the artists favour. One of theses shops caps weekly rent (max amount payable to the shop) at £200 per week, the other caps at £150 per week.
Many artists, like myself, have left shops with % splits and rented space direct to open private studios. This may be a kick back against the high number of business people opening tattoo shops with little regard for the craft, just the bucks, or just the ease with which a qualified (whatever that means) artist can make work without lining someone else’s pocket (at least not so much).
BTW I’m not down on shops and the advantages they have, such as high visibility, possibly long standing reputation, the whole social side etc, but when you’re handing over £20k+ per year before taxes, you may want to look at options.
