Hi guys,

Novice tattooer here. I purchased a brand new PJ-763 printer on eBay a month ago but I'm not sure if it is user error but I can't get the thermal printer to work for me for printing stencils.

If there is anyone that has more experience with this printer and would like to purchase it please let me know. It comes with the AC power adapter and USB cable. I would only want cost + shipping. I am from Ontario, Canada. Paid $375 Canadian.

Thanks!

Here is a picture of the printer

Are you really sure you want to sell it because of this?

I have a Brother 773 and LOVE it now, but there were quite some settings to make before I would get it to work the way I wanted.

Also there's a difference in what connection the machine depending on which brother you have. 763, 773 and so on. I don't remember which one is supposed to connect which way. I have mine connected with a cable to my computer as I HATE bluetooth.

Maybe balooka has some more info in this.

I can try :)

I have the 723 wired to a Mac and I love it. I'm not sure what your issues are but after the initial setup (which can be a tad confusing in some areas) it works like a charm and never failed me.

What problems are you experiencing? Is it the connection to the printer or the actual output of the stencil?

Hi Malin,

I would love to keep it but I just can't get it to work consistently with different designs. It seems to work well for the first half of the page on very simple designs but has trouble half way through. I have the 763 model that connects via android but I only use the usb connector to my macbook.

I will post some designs I've tried to print out below and the settings I've tried to work with

Hi Jay,

I am experiencing issues with the output of the stencil. It only seems to work consistently for me 50% of the time. Only seems to work great for very simple designs that don't include much detail and jams up about half way through the page therefore distorting the image to look condensed.

I will post some designs below I've tried to print and the settings I've used that gave me the best results so far lol

Here are the examples I've tried to print. *These are not my designs, just found them online and used to test out the printer*

As you can see it did pretty well on the lady head, hands and cartoon lightning bolt but not so well on the others.

I've tried using both Spirit Thermal Paper and the cheap Amazon ones.

My settings are:
Density: 5
2 Ply mode: Disabled
Feed margin: 1 inch
Print speed: 1.1 ips
Dash line print: Off
Halftone: For logo and text (binary)
Negative printing: Off
Roll printer case: Printer default

Hi Kat, I assume you have the Brother Printer Settings Tool installed?
If you open that you can export your current settings that are stored in the printer itself (so that is always what it'll use, unless you modify the settings in illustrator or photoshop or something like that.) Save those settings on your desktop for now.

I'll give you my settings that work for me, so you can test if that helps. You can just import those in the same application.

download here

Forgot to ask, where are you printing from? Photoshop?

Yes I do have the settings tool installed. I'm currently trying to open it and import your settings but the program keeps crashing and not responding. I will update you once I have it working thanks :) I am printing from Photoshop yes

balooka MalligaMallan may I ask what type of power supply are you guys using with your printers ? I was watching one of Paul Talbots videos and he said that it could be one of the factors affecting the stencils. The one I currently have is 12V 500mA

15v, 4 amps says mine. I recall him mentioning that indeed. Do you have another one laying around? Those are pretty common powersupplies.

I don't have one laying around but will check the store tomorrow or order one online since they're fairly cheap doesn't hurt to try. I've been trying to import your settings all day but I keep getting an error message in the printer tool saying the file can't be read

I did see that video by Talbot too, and went and bought one for a guitar - that is what he recommended if I remember correctly? It didn't make any difference for me. I tried it for a while, but then switched back to the original.

Great if you are getting somewhere with your stencils! ??????

One thing - I don't know if balooka already mentioned that - is that it can be a difference if you rotate the motif 90⁰ in photoshop before you print it.

I think what made the biggest difference for me was adjusting the blacks to be lighter and increasing density instead if I needed the stencil to be darker. Nevertheless you guys were such a big help! Thank you again. Happy holidays ??
