Some new work from me.
The back area is a problematic one for me, as I never find a good position for my hands.
Do you guys have any suggestions on how to have the perfect position? I tattooed the karma while standing.

Tattoos:

Video:
Can't see well the Karma but Ben is solid, very nice work!

What worked for me when tattoing the back is to get the client sitting, feet on the sofa, with knees on the chest. It gets you a little stretch and they can wait like this for a good moment without too much fatigue.
I feel it is much more of an hassle for both if the client is sitting straight, and the respiration movement is lessened.

That way, the back is quite round-curved, and i could get steady on my elbows (i'm a tall guy), and even have my forearms to rest on my client's back.
With this position, there's only a few lines where positionning yourself is difficult, but you mostly have all angles available.

Peace,

DKJ

I shaded a mid gray, behind the Karma, and at this point I will wait and see how it heals.
Thanks for the info about the position. I will try it next time I have a tattoo on that position.

Hei guys,

I will be posting the work I am doing as an Apprentice, here in this thread.
This one is the second I did on human skin and I am looking forward to improve and get better at this.
I only used a stencil for the lines, and did the shading free hand.
Constructive criticism is appreciated.

Easy peezy brudda.
Stand up when you do back tattoos and lower your tattoo bed. If you dont have that options, RIP your back but the best way is to stand up when doing back tattoos because you have a fulcrum for your shoulders now.

I stand up for back tattoos, shoulder tattoos, and throat tattoos.
I did a dolphin today on the chest and I also stood up for it. It felt way more comfortable, but then I realised that I need a workbench that can be lifted up to my level. It was a bit inconvenient to get the needle into the in cups at such a lower level.

Bet your lines were crispier though brudda. Sacrifice for benefit.

It felt better to have it done from that position, indeed.
The client insisted to have it done there in that place, under the neck and collar bone.
Here is how it ended up:

Why would you lower bed if you stand up, i don't get it?
If i stand up, i'm higher so i would get my bed higher instead of breaking my back, no?
What am i missing?

Peace,

I lower mine because of the angle. It makes it easier to keep your back straight.
It also depends on the tattoo like I said in another post though. If I'm doing script, I want the bed right up in my face but if I'm doing a larger piece I'd want to see the entire layout so I know how to map it out as I go.

I did the chest tattoo today, and it was really comfy, having the client all the way up on the bed, on a 45 angle, and I just did my thing, with no hunchback posture, or anything like that. Was quite comfy.
Also this tattoo was my first ever coverup. Photos and video coming up next week :D

Where you find this selfie of me xD
Good job bro.
Only advice I have is to punch those line weights a bit more to give it depth.

So this is my first ever coverup.
Unfortunately I was not smart enough to take a before and after picture, but will do so next time.
The tattoo is positioned that way in order to better hide the old model, with the black and red colors.

Good work…as usual.

Shame about the ‘before’ image for the cover up and it will be interesting to see how that one looks healed, especially under the red. I’ve done cover ups that looked good walking out the door, but on healing the dark elements came back through. I tend to build in some shading now to make sure nothing pokes through.

Keep in mind that you need a darker tone to cover any old/original ink, and that cool colours work better than warm in achieving an effective cover up. I know Minnie’s ribbon is red, but you may need a cooler red with a little more blue in it (not a purple) to be effective.

UPDATE: I just watched your video after posting and it looks like what you are covering is pretty light and small.

Hei,

I am also curious of how all my Tattoos heal, but the customers keep forgetting to send me photos, all though I ask all of them to do so, after the tattoo is healed.
The coverup was indeed something really light. I believe it was just some numbers, and it was a light washed up blue. I do not intend to work on more complex cover up tattoos at this point and skill level.

I got to work on some realism today, and really enjoyed it. Of course there is still much to learn and develop.

Here is the finished tattoo:
