great job!, make the most of being able to tattoo that solid black between the finger webs without someone screaming in agony.

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and joined premium only 2/3 weeks ago.

This is my 2nd tattoo i did on right calf. My first was the small one below this big piece. I actually did this last night. spent 5 hours on it.
I used 5RL for outline and then 7M1 for color packing. Struggled with getting ink into the small areas...kinda ruined it a little. Should have used a RS but didn't have any needles.

Don't be too hard on yourself, you did well, you can use your 5rl to pack into the tight spots before you go to the Mag... Very nice mate!

here's this weekend's practice. It's my third week attempting to learn how to tattoo and it feels like I have soooo far to go.

This is my latest self tattoo. Healed lighter than I was hoping. I'm going to darken it up a bit at some stage.

I like your use of color! I feel like it is blended quite nicely. My only critique is that your lines are a bit shaky, which is hard when tattooing yourself cause it hurts. I also see the lines getting a bit light in places on the outline. Perhaps it was intentional, but if not, just keep an eye on your needle depth.

Yeah the light lines were intentional. Trying to give the translucent look of punamu (nz jade)

Here's my latest self tattoo on my arm...

Needs to be touched up in a few weeks. Especially in the areas that were nearly impossible to stretch as there is some patchiness. Also need to work more on the smoke and add some defining lines to the softer areas.

Niiiice omnilydia !!! I'm just starting hand poking. I've only done two on myself so far. And one on another person. What's your experience so far? Needles and such? I've tried single needle (useless), 3rl, 5rl and a 7cm. I bought some textured needles and they seem to be good for ink flow.

How long did no1 and no2 take? I'm about to do a mandala in a couple of weeks which I will have to make in several sessions ?

Couple self inflicted cover ups and some color work. About to do some reworking on the ones on my arm so will certainly post when I do!

Haha yeah single needles really are only good for very fine shading! I started with using a 5rl and I found a 7rl and 9rl would be good for getting the ink in and thick lines! The first two were one of my firsts so they did take me 7 or so hours with lots of breaks.
good luck with your mandala! I’m excited to see it :)

This must be the 4th i did, on my leg.
It's also my avatar.
Cryptic symbolism.
It should be packed black but i'm using it to test my gradients ;-)

Peace,

With a KITCHEN FORK??? Did you use a hammer to get it in? ? For being with a kitchen fork that looks ace. I think it looks pretty decent even if it would have been done with a traditional needle. You know there are needles? ?

i take it you are trying to make me feel better about it ... i should have tried on practice skin first before i did this...at least i learned my lesson there ... i though it would be like drawing on paper with a bit of pain perhaps :) ... obviously i was wrong :) ... but thank you anyways lol

I definitely didn't try to make you feel better, I think it looks great. But of course I don't know what your reference looked like, and if you wanted fat, bold black lines toy didn't succeed very well ? Now they look very sketchy, and sensitive (you say that? ?) in an arty way. I love that.

But you must have been having more than one go at it? And with a machine? No way you did that shading with a kitchen fork! ??

the bottom one was the very first time i tried tattooing ever and it was done all in one go with a very shitty cheap tattoo machine from amazon the following day i did the one above .... however i though the bottom wings were just too small and looking funny so i tried to cover them up with bigger ones a couple of weeks later and again I learned a few things lol ... tattoo take longer than 2 weeks to heal (i did think its just me being a <> or oversensitive on that day so pushed through anyways which wasn't the best idea) and that you should get some experience first before attempting a coverups so you don't end up like me .... it was a long time ago though i think i will try to redo them both next week as i have a couple of days free and talking about it gassed me up ... i will post a picture once healed and hopefully looking at least half decent... :)

Since I don't dare to open a thread for my still mediocre work, here's my latest:

IMG_20210530_174502_s.jpg
I just made this on my left forearm (inside). Some eight years ago I had a similar tattoo made on my right forearm (outside). That tattoo was waaaay to thick and in the end I removed it which didn't went well either because it was my first removal.
But, I always wanted to have the original tattoo (more or less, the design has changed slightly) done again and since I've started tattooing myself I now felt confident I could do it too, but better, just like I wanted it.
This is just half an hour ago done, as clearly visible. It will need some small refinement as I already see some tiny defects. Overall I'm pretty happy with the result. This is my ninth tattoo and by now I feel comfortable with my gear, ink and setup. I have no spray, no ink blobs and a nice ink flow, using a needle and hand speed that suit me well.
Scorpion black ink, CNC Q2 with 1203RL. Size is about 5 x 2,5 cms.

This top portion of the Playboy I filled in myself holding the gun upside mostly. My neck was cramping up big time cuz I was a lot slower when I first started and because for some reason ur foot falls off the peddle a lot more often when you tattoo yourself lol. I'm sure everyone that has self tattoos knows what I mean. Anyways fresh and healed images of another self tattoo sesh...

hey peeps,

theres already been a start of a thread for something like this but a suggestion to make an entirely new thread dedicated to artists self work, ( which in most cases was done whilst learning) so post your piks or tatts youve done on yourself

Well, getting used to everything.... I have tattoed on skin, have tattooed a few practice skins too, will post a sequence of pieces from start to finish when i get a chance to find all the pics. Note, used a pen rotary, 7.5v, 3rl for lines and 11RM for shading, i know its a too big needle or i dont have the control of it as yet, shades are dense, used about a 60% grey wash. Not neat, kinda sloppy but rushed this one out in 40 minutes, from stencil to final wipe.IMG_20211114_220333_1.jpg

This one is 2+ years healed. The further I got from my eyes the less I could look down on the line, which was a problem. Though I can say that the main pain was the sitting position…not the needles.

Lovely! I can see it gets a little wobbly further down, but also a little weak in lines on top. Which I only point out because it makes me happy to see I'm not the only one who can get weak healed lines šŸ˜†

And I know what you mean about position.....šŸ˜ Been there too.

Definitely agree there's more pain from weird positions when tattooing yourself than the actual tattoo. Also trying to pull lines at strange angles will always make for some wobbles and inconsistent depth. Tattoo looks good though. I like your colour mix
